Apparently, when Baden-Powell was in Africa he was told by an African tribal leader to shake with the left hand. It comes down to a story about two African tribal leaders who were at war. One wanted to make peace so he greeted the other on the border of their lands and offered his left hand to shake. His left hand would normally have been holding a shield so not carrying a shield when greeting his enemy was both a sign of trust and bravery. It is but the Scouts do it with their left hand.
