Some good news for a change

! This post hasn't been updated in over a year. A lot can change in a year including my opinion and the amount of naughty words I use. There's a good chance that there's something in what's written below that someone will find objectionable. That's fine, if I tried to please everybody all of the time then I'd be a Lib Dem (remember them?) and I'm certainly not one of those. The point is, I'm not the kind of person to try and alter history in case I said something in the past that someone can use against me in the future but just remember that the person I was then isn't the person I am now nor the person I'll be in a year's time.

About 10 years ago my mum was diagnosed Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.  Needless to say, it was a difficult time for the whole family and I got through it by pretending it wasn’t happening.  She spent a couple of months in isolation in a hospital in Birmingham and had to have her heart stopped twice to bring her heartbeat under control but I still managed to ignore it!  Isn’t the human mind a wonderful thing?

Anyway, she went into remission about 8 years ago and when she went for her annual check-up today they told her that if she goes next year and everything’s ok then they’ll give her the all-clear.  Which is a weight-off my mind, obviously.

And slightly less importantly, but good news nonetheless, is that #3 has developed a healthy taste for hard rock and death metal.  He quite likes a bit of Rammstein, which is nice (yes, I know Rammstein is industrial metal before any metal-geeks feel the need to tell me off!).  Next task it go hunting for some metal tracks that aren’t about sex and drugs or contain more anglo-saxon words than a viking’s dictionary.  Any suitable suggestions for a 6 year old?

That is wonderful news about your Mum. I know how it feels to worry about a parents health.

Well I’d suggest starting with ACDC,Atreyu,Bullet for my Valentine,Coheed and Cambria,Killswitch Engage and Trivium.
But also try to show him something else than just the hard stuff and see if he develops a taste for it.
I know because I started the other way around, with the softer stuff and then got interested in some harder stuff too.
And don’t worry he won’t go off and become a drug addicted lowlife.
    Afterall it’s just music.

Dream Theater,Thunder and Three Days Grace. Ignore the words and focus on the technique!
I have been listening to rock music of all genres snce the 60s and have lived to remain a well balanced right wing libertarian. There is hope; my children and I listen to a lot of the same stuff now.

Cherry, thanks. It’s the last thing anyone needs!

Willie, Dream Theater are excellent. All the kids like Metropolis 2 which is, imho, one of the best albums ever written by anyone ever at any time in the history of music.

Jerry, he likes pop songs as well. He’s always singing and dancing around to the music channels the mrs listens to (needless to say, it’s not Kerrang or Scuzz or Metal TV). He was moshing in the car yesterday!

If you are happy him being a spotty swot with glasses, then I’m sure music with lots of ‘technique’ will serve him well.

However, if you want him to be a cool kid, I would recommend any if not all of the first 5 ramones albums.

I’m a fan of Rammstein, especially where there’s lego involved http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qxUZUnRwH7s

    Best wishes to your mum

Could child abuse not be defined as playing your children Yes, ELP & King Crimson and persuading them it is good worthwhile music for young people to make & listen to?

Good news for mum but is it good news for the rest of us, now that weight is off your mind, what will you get up to?

    I shudder to think

More stress today – my dad was taken to hospital by ambulance because his GP thought he was having a heart attack. Turns out he just has some type of nasty bug and a high temperature and they’ve given him broad spectrum antibiotics and sent him home.

    Happy days.

I think you and me are both having troubles with our parents, my Dad came out of hospital yesterday after a week (we thought he was going in over night). He is OK just lots of things happened at once! He has to go back for further treatment tho…
