Welcome to Telford, heathen capital of England!

! This post hasn't been updated in over a year. A lot can change in a year including my opinion and the amount of naughty words I use. There's a good chance that there's something in what's written below that someone will find objectionable. That's fine, if I tried to please everybody all of the time then I'd be a Lib Dem (remember them?) and I'm certainly not one of those. The point is, I'm not the kind of person to try and alter history in case I said something in the past that someone can use against me in the future but just remember that the person I was then isn't the person I am now nor the person I'll be in a year's time.

Apparently, Telford is the most godless town in the UK.  Excellent!  Let’s keep it that way.
So godless are my fellow Telfordonians that the Church of England has seen fit to send a missionary to tame the savages redeem us.

According to the Church of England, Telford has the lowest per capita church attendance in the UK.  This really doesn’t surprise me, there aren’t many churches around for the people who want to go anyway.  Most of the housing estates in Telford have a single multi-faith church and the one by me is mostly used by the local Ghanaian immigrant population for a bit of happy clappy late night singing and praying.  I imagine most of them have been adopted by local immigrant groups who have a more zealous approach to religion.

I personally have no religion – I decided at a very young age that I didn’t believe and it was evidently such a revelation that I still remember it to this day.  However, I do respect the fact that not everybody is as well adjusted and able to cope with the realities of life, the universe and everything and feel the need to believe in a supernatural being.  Those people should be allowed to go about their god bothering if they want to whilst us right-thinking atheists go about our heathen business.  Missionaries prey on the vulnerable – the elderly, the young and the sick.  They may have good intentions but in reality they’re no better than pushy double glazing salesmen.

In some cases I’d say they might be worse than double glazing salesmen. At least when you buy double glazing, irrespective of cost, you can see what you’re getting for your money. Not always the case with God Botherers Ltd.

Axel, it would be hard not to believe in Alex the Salmon when his mug’s in the papers!

Ginge, at least with double glazing salesmen you can say “look I’ve already got it”. With god botherers they try to sell you their god even if you’ve already got one.

Jem bought me Dawkins: “The God Delusion” for crimbo..not had a chance to read it yet, as it’s packed up.

You should come and have a chat to one humanities staff member – he’s the one who brought the book and others like it to us, and who loves debating religion.

Then at the other end of the scale, there’s a chap in maths that said “my religion tells me not to kill, and tells me right from wrong. It’s not upbringing, morality or peer values, it’s religion that tells us how to deal with everything”.

I did point out that I’m not religious, not baptised, not a churchgoer, not overly spiritual etc..yet I’ve never killed/stolen/etc, so how was that explained?

    He had no answer.

What he obviously doesn’t realise is that the morals his religion gave him come directly from evolution. If your species is to survive you don’t go around killing each other, diluting your genetics with other animals, depriving the rest of your species of essentials, etc.
