I have been in the past Charlie, or one of it’s predecessors. I was temping and had a knee operation and because I hadn’t paid enough national insurance contributions I had to go on jobseekers allowance instead of incapacity. Because of the inflexible rules I had to go to some variation of this scheme. I turned up and all they could offer me was help with my CV, the use of a computer and help with interviews. I already had a CV, the use of a computer and was fine in interviews. They told me to sit and wait for the next bus to take me home.

There are three types of people who go these new deal type things – those who don’t want to work, those who want to work but need help and those who don’t need help but the rules say they have to go. The ones who need help are in the minority.

I hope you are never out of work so long that you have to attend a “bullshit scheme for occupying lazy unemployable people”, Wonko.

The whole point of the test is to have people finding out about the history and traditions of the country of which they are becoming a citizen. Surely this is a good thing?
