EU-wide refererendum on the EU Constitution

! This post hasn't been updated in over a year. A lot can change in a year including my opinion and the amount of naughty words I use. There's a good chance that there's something in what's written below that someone will find objectionable. That's fine, if I tried to please everybody all of the time then I'd be a Lib Dem (remember them?) and I'm certainly not one of those. The point is, I'm not the kind of person to try and alter history in case I said something in the past that someone can use against me in the future but just remember that the person I was then isn't the person I am now nor the person I'll be in a year's time.

The Independence and Democracy Group in the European Parliament has started an EU-wide petition on a referendum on the EU not-a-constitution.

Signatures from the UK are pitifully low which certainly doesn’t reflect public opinion so do your bit and sign the petition and show those gutless, eurofederalist bastards that we don’t want their constitution.

There’s also a UK petition and campaign, .

I would warn against! An EU wide referendum as it would play into the hands of the Federalists, this would be just what they wanted, the creation of an EU demos even if it were only in a referendum. There is also the point that this one is calling for a referendum on the “NEXT” EU treaty not the Lisbon / Reform / Constitution. I know the wording indicates they are referring to this treaty but they actually say the NEXT, consider as far as the EU is concerned this one is already signed salad and almost delivered.

An EU wide referendum presupposes that the member state have already given up the power to veto treaty change, would not be in anyway binding, and contradicts the whole idea that EU treaties; are issues solely for the member states and their citizens to decide which powers to pass to the EU.

The EU parliament has no place in this issue as it is not one of the member states so it is not one of the donors of power.

Calling for a referendum now for the next treaty can only muddle the call for one on this treaty.

The other point about an EU wide referendum is that the votes in the mainly pro states will be used to override those in Britain where we are mainly anti, and it really has nothing to do with the people of Spain etc whether we in Britain decide to vote yes or no.

Also the federalists were the ones suggesting an EU wide referendum in the first place.
Back in 2005 European Liberal Democrat leader Graham Watson called for the same thing, stating that it would “ensure a truly European debate rather than a series of narrow, national debates” but that is exactly what a national referendum on the EU should be about; as it is a method for us citizens of the member states to give, or refuse to give our assent to changes in the way in which we are governed.
